What is unilateral gynecomastia?
It’s the enlargement of one breast due to gynecomastia. Gynecomastia occurs in males and is characterized by abnormally large mammary glands that result in breast enlargement. The condition can affect infants, adolescents, and the elderly. Typically, gynecomastia in adolescent boys and the elderly is an effect of a disease or metabolic disorders. This condition has been a common source of distress for adolescents, but for those who didn’t develop gynecomastia from obesity, breast development shrinks and disappears within a couple of years.
The causes of gynecomastia are still unknown, but it’s being widely correlated to cases of sex hormone imbalance. Another phenomenon being considered is the imbalance of estrogenic and androgenic effects on the breast that yield an increased action on breast tissue. Around 4% to 10% of this condition has been associated with drugs, which can cause some degree of volumetric increase of breast tissue, chest fat, and skin. Although, chances could increase if several gynecomastia-inducing drugs were administered one after the other.
Aside from the unilateral type, gynecomastia can manifest in other ways:
- Puffy Nipples – One of the most common forms; the glandular tissue piles under and usually confined to the areola
- Pure Glandular – May be caused by anabolic steroids, in which excessive testosterone levels are converted to estrogen
- Adolescent – A congenital type that happens with boys ages 12 to 18; it recedes with age in some cases
- Adult – The most common form; it’s compost of glandular tissue and may contain varying amounts of adipose and fibrous tissue
- Pseudogynecomastia – Composed of adipose tissue and isn’t a real gynecomastia; it may be the only type that can be improved via liposuction
- Pseudogynecomastia-enlarged Diameter – May occur free of adipose and/or fibro-sclerotic glandular tissue deposition behind and around the nipple-areola region
- Severe Gynecomastia – Identified by saggy skin and very enlarged breasts; partly determined by age as older men who developed gynecomastia have less elastic skin
Treatment of the underlying cause may result into improvements in the condition. Alternative medication to prevent gynecomastia side-effects are often taken while treating the primary condition. Gynecomastia isn’t harmful by itself, but it can serve as an indicator for other more serious conditions in some cases, like testicular cancer.
