What is tenolysis?

Tenolysis is a procedure that frees a tendon from adhesions.  Tendons are tasked to connect muscle to the bone; adhesion occurs when scar tissue molds and binds tendons to surrounding tissue.  If adhesion takes place, it can be difficult for the affected body part to work properly.  Tenolysis is often performed on hands and wrists, and when other therapies are not working.  It may be combined with other procedures to ultimately recover correct movement of the affected part.

Before operation pushes forward, the doctor may conduct a physical exam, urine and blood tests, an MRI scan, and ask about what medicines are currently being taken.  Local anesthesia is naturally supplied to block out pain, but primarily aims to impede nerve impulses.  If cases are severe, general anesthesia may be administered in its place.

After a trip from the operating room, incision areas are expected to be heavily bandaged.  The bandages will be replaced with lighter ones later on, so that regaining movement will be easier to achieve along with a therapist’s guidance.  Depending on the area of surgery, a splint may also be required.

Surgery time varies from case to case.  Some can take between 45 and 60 minutes to repair.  Anesthesia is given for this process, and pain medications are prescribed for any discomfort felt during recovery.  Patients are required to stay 1 to 2 days in the hospital, which would only extend if other problems have been found.

Stitches are removed around 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.  Light activities will then be allowed, but strenuous ones are to be avoided for at least four more weeks.  If the patient is wearing a splint, the doctor will say when it can be taken off.  Permission to drive is also determined by the physician.  After surgery and during recovery, physical therapy will be facilitated for regaining motion and strength.
