Philippine Hair Transplant Procedure
What is Hair Transplant?
Loss of hair is a natural occurrence and part of the aging process. It affects men and women alike. Hair loss — which can be caused by hormonal changes, genetics, aging, or a combination — can lower a person’s image and self-confidence. Hair Transplant is a surgical procedure that redistributes hair in areas where they are needed and the results are permanent.
Hair Transplant can be done in more than one way. The basic concept is to harvest patches of scalp grafts from a donor site and relocate them to a balding or thinning area. Depending on the aim of the patient and selected method, Hair Transplant can take more than one session.
How is Hair Transplant Performed?
The procedure is done under local anesthesia plus mild sedation (optional) and on an outpatient basis. It takes about six hours to complete surgery.
Donor hair can be harvested using two ways:
Strip Harvesting
A strip of scalped is removed, the wound is sutured for closure, and the strip is dividend into small pieces of tissue (grafts) that are then transplanted to the thinning areas of the patient’s head. There is a linear scar left where the strip was removed, but if the hair from that area is long, it should be covered. Recovery takes about two weeks, requiring the patient to come back to have the stitches removed.
Follicular Unit Extraction
Individual hair follicles are drawn out, which uses tiny punches of between 0.6 mm and 1.25 mm in diameter. Using a micro blade or a very fine needle, each follicle is reinserted back in the scalp. Often, the hairs are angled inconsistently to display a realistic hair pattern. Due to the follicles’ thickness, small scars remain and little post-surgical pain is left. Because no suture removal is needed, recovery from this method takes place within seven days.
Risks of Hair Transplant
Complications are minor, including swelling of the scalp and forehead areas, itching, scarring, and (sometimes) infection. There may also be instances of skin discoloration and numbness on donor and recipient sites.
Who Can be Considered for Hair Transplant?
Balding individuals who have abundant hair on other areas, who aren’t taking blood thinners, and are capable of drawing realistic expectations and aware of its limitations. Any irritations or medical problems should be shared with the doctor prior surgery.
Facts on Hair Transplant
- Hair can be transplanted to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair, and pubic hair; it can also be used to fill scars from accidents or surgery (like Face Lifts) and previous hair transplants
- When itching starts to occur, using a moisturizer or massage shampoo will serve as relief and minimize further scarring.
