What is Alar Trimming?

Alar Trimming, or Alarplasty, is usually performed on patients who posses wide nostrils and flaring alar lobule. Most patients who request for this procedure are Asians, since they naturally tend to carry a wide, round nasal tip with an overhang of the alar lobule. Alar Trimming narrows out the nostril span and alar base to provide a sharper a more proportioned nasal profile. In addition, the contour and definition of the alar lobule area improves.

How is Alar Trimming Performed?

Alar Trimming is a minor surgical procedure that completes withing 30 to 40 minutes and performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with mild sedation.

The surgeon makes incisions, externally or internally, to remove nasal skin and tissue. The alar base is then fashioned to make it more proportioned with the width of the nostril and open areas are sutured together. Approximately one hour is given to the patient to recover from the sedative, then a cold compress applied over the site of the operation.

The patient must follow up for check-ups and suture removal 5 to 7 days after surgery.

Risks of Alar Trimming

Since Alar Trimming is a minor procedure, complications are mostly simple and rare. They include bleeding, infection, deviation of the implant, asymmetry, and prolonged redness of the nose in case the implant is scheduled for an extrusion. Side-effects include bruising and some minor swelling.
