Plastic Surgeon Shares Vegan Insights for Post-op Recovery
California plastic surgeon Dr Charles Perry has a theory that while people who go on a vegan diet aren’t likely to have a pleasant experience during surgery, they recover quicker and better. And as such, he began to live a healthier lifestyle by following a vegan diet himself.
“Veganism represents a pure form of change. It is a habit that can improve self-esteem as it joins the outer and inner body image as one strives to live a healthy and happy life,” said Dr Perry.
He says the vegan concept has similarities with plastic surgery in such a way that a person’s changes inward may be inconsistent with what happens outward. By seeing the relationship of the two, he discovered that his connection with vegan and paleo dietarians has improved. This connection extends to the surgery room, where they experienced less swelling and faster healing all of a sudden.
Compared to the average American diet, vegans and paleos take into account food with micro-nutrients that are vital to efficient healing and recovery. That’s why Dr Perry shares some insights which nutrients to look out for to have increased recovery. According to him, low fiber diet is appropriate right before surgery. Having a lot of branch-chain amino acids in the body helps the healing process. Finally, omega three oils should be avoided as much as possible since they cause additional bruising.
