Because plastic surgery is thriving, doctors from other specialties take short courses and take part when those aren’t enough to qualify them to carry out related procedures.

Today, it isn’t strange to find ER doctors doing liposuction, or gynecologists offering breast augmentation services.

Although US regulations certainly are lacking in the medical area, society helped influence cosmetic surgery’s current disposition. When a procedure such as liposuction is placed beside promo offers for a haircut or a manicure on the internet, it’s easy for people to view it casually — and there lies a heavy risk.

If cosmetic enhancements are desired, the safest way to have them is through a board-certified plastic surgeon. Not just any board certification will do. In the US, bona fide plastic surgerons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Asking around about a particular surgeon is also good practice. Consultations reveal a lot about a doctor. A real plastic surgeon would welcome questions and is confident enough to show before-and-after photos. The amount of time a doctor spends with the patient during consultation is usually directly proportional to the amount of care he or she would place during surgery. If a physician seems rushing, overly eager, or puts pressure on offering procedures a patient doesn’t want, it’s a cue to find another doctor.
