Plastic Surgery Revved Up Together with the US Economy

<

Plastic surgery exploded in 2011 as the economy picked itself up from the recession. According to an annual report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Americans roughly had 1.6 million cosmetic surgeries during the year, and it was the second rise after its massive downturn in 2009.

ASPS president Malcolm Z. Roth said it was likely to happen since everything else seem to have recovered from the fall. However, Americans still weren’t able to match the number of surgeries back in 2005, which summed to a whopping 2.1 million.

Non-invasive procedures, on the other hand, went as high as 12.2 million in 2011 with patients sticking with their trusted physicians for Botox, facial fillers, etc. Madonna, who recently performed during half-time at the Super Bowl, seemed to have achieved great results from similar procedures compared to her overdone appearance before, plastic surgeons say — although, she never admitted to any involvement with plastic surgery.

These are the top 5 surgeries in 2011:

  • Breast augmentation (307,000)
  • Nose reshaping (244,000)
  • Liposuction (205,000)
  • Eyelid surgery (196,000)
  • Face lift (119,000)

While these are the top 5 non-surgical procedures in the same year:

  • Botox and other neuromodulator injections (5.7 million)
  • Soft tissue fillers (1.9 million)
  • Chemical peels (1.1 million)
  • Laser hair removal (1.1 million)
  • Microdermabrasion (900,000)
