Anesthesia is a significant part of the surgical procedure. This integral factor for a smooth operation ensures both safety and comfort for the patient. Local anesthesia
This type of anesthesia is administered to dull the sensations and prevent pain in a specific, localized area of the body. Usually in the form of an injection, spray or cream, local anesthesia allows the patient to remain conscious throughout the entire surgery.
Regional anesthesia
The regional type of anesthesia is applied to a larger region of the body. This is also known as nerve blocks: some situations involve injecting the anesthesia in a specific cluster of nerves, thereby disabling the pain receptors and preventing the painful sensation. Like the local anesthesia, regional anesthesia allows the surgical patient to remain conscious during the procedure.
Conscious Sedation
Conscious sedation goes beyond dulling a particular part of the body. As what its name implies, this type of anesthesia puts the patient in a state of sedation, with a feeling of extreme relaxation and drowsiness. The sedative can be used together with regional or local anesthesia, with the former working to alleviate the pain upon the patient’s return to complete consciousness. Conscious sedation is administered to a patient orally, or via intravenous (IV), or gas.
General Anesthesia
The general anesthesia is the most wide-working of all the available types. This kind puts the body in an anesthetized state, making it the most suitable option for extensive plastic surgery operations. General anesthesia is usually administered via IV or gas (or both), and is usually preceded by sedatives of medication that helps impair the patient’s memory. General anesthesia also has the highest risk of side effects. In reply to this, doctors administering general anesthesia constantly monitor the patients’ vital signs, allowing them to promptly respond in case of an emergency.
