A couple of the world’s emerging economies are showing increased spending and patronage for plastic surgery procedures, according to a recently-published survey.
China and India, two of the world’s developing countries, have over the last year shown notable increases in the number of executed plastic surgery procedures. The two nations placed 3rd and 4th in a list of the top 25 countries with the most number of plastic surgery procedures done in 2009, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Official numbers showed that China had a total of 2,193,935 procedures (1,215,245 surgical, 978,690 non-surgical). India, on the other hand, followed with a total of 894,700 total procedures (683,160 surgical, 211,540 non-surgical).
Experts weighing in on the data relate the two countries’ activities to the relatively large availability of disposable income, and the accessibility of clinics and professionals offering plastic surgery services.
“Countries like China and India with emerging economies are generating a lot of wealth,” explained ISAPS president Foad Nahai. “And as that wealth is passed around, people are choosing to spend their discretionary income on aesthetic procedures.”
The surgical community pegs the trend on the easy access that people have to these procedures, especially in India.
“The techniques are easily available in metro towns,” explained Dr. S Keswani, a plastic surgeon. “People are aware of them.”
The list of the top 25 countries is topped by the United States (3,031,146 total procedures), immediately followed by Brazil (2,475,237 total procedures). Landing on the 5th spot is Mexico, with a total of 835,280 procedures.
In a broader scope, however, among all the world’s continents, Asia comes out on top with 5,704,227 total procedures, followed by North America (4,155,995), South America (3,417,875), Africa (303,311) and Oceania (175,520).
The most popular procedure performed by doctors worldwide is liposuction (1,607,979), followed by breast augmentation (1,454,317).
