Bintangor Tree-based HIV Cure Trials in Homestretch

A team of scientists reveals they are in the final phase of clinical trials in search for a cure for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which to this day remains untreatable.

The team composed of experts from America and Sarawak, Malaysia has been testing the effects of a compound derived from the Bintangor tree for HIV treatment for the last 10 years. The experiments are driven by the common hypothesis that the Calanolide, the compound from the Bintangor tree, might be the answer to the ongoing question regarding a cure for HIV.

“The compound, if proven effective in curing HIV, will be a major discover from Sarawak,” said Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

The experiment involved Malaysian scientists extracting the compound at the Sarawak Biodiversity Center (SBC), and afterwards sending it to Seattle for trials.

Taib, however, could not give an exact date for the distribution of the compound to the world market.

Appearing at the opening of the SBC’s new administrative building near the city of Kuching, Taib further announced that the state government had allocated a piece of land in the Bau district for the planting of Bintangor trees. Furthermore, RM10 million in funding had been allocated to the SBC for research efforts.
