Philippine Medical Tourism to Grow in Next Five Years

A recently-published report predicted the Philippine medical tourism industry to experience further significant growth in the next five years, despite it being a “relatively new [player] in the medical tourism market.”

The Philippine medical tourism industry is set to catapult itself into further development, joining Malaysia in the predicted five-year boom, according to the Asian Medical Tourism Analysis (2008-2012).  This upward movement takes place amidst a computed Asia-wide medical tourism compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.6% from 2007 and 2012.

Meanwhile, experts note the contribution of the growing Philippine cosmetic surgery industry to the forecasted growth of the medical tourism industry, saying that the ongoing social acceptance and patronage towards the Philippines’ cosmetic surgery procedures will help encourage Filipino doctors to consider performing several beauty enhancement operations.

They add, however, that stringent management needs to be enacted to ensure that Philippine cosmetic surgery doctors are given the appropriate training and certification in order to be allowed to implement their practice in the country.
