5 Myths of Breast Augmentation

admin | Latest News & Events | June 16, 2010

Breast augmentation is identified to be one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the Philippines, and the world over.  Many women who have undergone this surgical procedure have attested to its many benefits, and its life-altering possibilities.

Despite the growing acceptance and patronage for Philippine breast augmentation surgery, some myths still (inevitably) persist about the procedure, spurring falsehoods and misleading statements about everything from the types of procedure, to safety concerns.

Below are 5 of the most prevalent myths, and the facts that debunk them:

MYTH #1

Breast augmentation causes breast cancer

FACT

To date, there have been no specific studies that have linked breast augmentation surgery to elevated risks of breast cancer.  In fact, the National Cancer Institute revealed based on numerous studies that there is no difference between the cancer risks of women with breast implants, and those without.

MYTH #2

Breast implants can burst or rupture very easily

FACT

The sets of breast implants in a plastic surgeon’s clinic have, each and every single one, undergone extensive tests of safety and durability.  The tests that the implants are put through include placing them in between two metal plates, and squeezing them at an incredibly rapid pace.  They are squeezed for a total of up to two million times.

Although there are existing reports of implant rupture, these incidents are incredibly few, and their frequency is very negligible.

MYTH #3

A woman must not wear brassieres with underwire after undergoing breast augmentation

FACT

This myth actually comes with a dose of truth: a woman must not wear an underwire bra unless she is completely healed from her breast augmentation surgery.  Upon complete recovery, however, a woman who underwent breast augmentation surgery can in fact benefit from wearing an underwire bra, as it will further prevent the breasts from sagging.

MYTH #4

A woman cannot breastfeed after a breast augmentation procedure

FACT

There is absolutely no evidence that supports the notion of breast augmentation jeopardizing a woman’s breastfeeding capacity.  It must be known that breastfeeding abilities in fact vary with every woman, and breast implants have no influence whatsoever.

And in a related light, the notion of a woman with breast implants exposing her baby to dangerous amounts of silicone when breastfeeding is also untrue.

MYTH #5

Accurate mammograms are impossible after breast augmentation

FACT

This myth can be debunked by the right radiologist.

Although it is true that breast implants can impede the results of mammograms, it must be known that medical experts have identified, and solved this problem by taking more films of the woman’s breasts, involving more angles.  Experts have identified how to best position a breast in order to take an accurate, reliable mammogram despite the presence of breast implants.
